Potential For GRI's From Asia Next Month

According to a report in The Loadstar, carriers are 'holding off quoting for May shipments ahead of anticipated general rate increases (GRIs)'.

The GRI is a hot topic of debate right now, and we understand that carrier alliances are considering GRI's in May on Asia-European routes, although no official announcement has been made yet.

Steamship lines seem to be projecting an increase in demand as the traditional peak season approaches, and with the succession of blanked sailings during recent weeks it appears that an opportunity to uplift rock bottom ocean freight rates may be on the horizon.

Of course, market conditions may determine that a fully blown GRI does not follow, but the capacity management programmes have certainly led to demand outweighing supply recently.
