Asia Ocean Update: Space & Capacity Issues

Capacity and equipment shortages have returned to the Asia ocean freight market, with conditions starting to resemble the post pandemic period.

Pretty much every carrier is now reporting an extreme lack of space on Far East and Southeast Asia inbound routes.

These developments appear to be due to;

- an increase in demand

- journey lengths being extended further due to increased range of Houthi rebels

- delayed schedules

- carrier’s blanked sailing programmes.

Ocean freight rates have now started to spiral upwards and despite the recent General Rate Increase (GRI), further increases are already being applied.

Equipment shortages are also causing booking problems on some regionalised origin points. Therefore, the whole booking process is becoming a major challenge, not dissimilar to the post pandemic period.

The team at Croft Cargo are working hard to avoid disruption and will be monitoring developments very closely. However, we ask that customer’s try to provide as much notice as possible ahead of bookings to enable us more opportunity to meet your requirements.
