We are on the eve of a national rail strike in Canada and just a week away from a planned port strike in India, with both set to disrupt ocean freight services in their respective regions should they go ahead.
In Canada, the railway and two major unions, the TCRC and CPKC, have been in an ongoing industrial dispute over scheduling, safety and pay, with an indefinite strike scheduled from August 22nd.
The strike was effectively confirmed as legal under Canadian law recently and a 13-day cooling-off period was inserted which ends today.
If the Canadian strike proceeds, which seems likely as things stand, then major disruption can be expected for ocean freight services in and out of the country, and to some extent the northern US too. Rail freight is an essential part of moving freight internally within Canada and also for moving freight cross-border.
In India, port workers are on the verge of a national strike, which is set to start on August 28th over wages, allowances and pensions. The National Coordination Committee of Port Workers have called the strike after prolonged and unsuccessful negotiations with the Ministry of Shipping.
The strike is expected to impact all of India's state run ports, which includes the nation's twelve largest ports. Naturally, this will severely disrupt ocean freight movements in and out of the country should ir proceed.
