Port workers may be about to go on an indefinite strike at India’s government run ports this month, unless outstanding issues are resolved during the next week.
Unions called off a strike at the eleventh hour in August, understanding that their wages and productivity schemes would be resolved, but it appears the dispute continues to rumble on.
As things stand, port workers are poised to stage an indefinite walkout throughout state run ports from December 17th, unless the government meets their deadline and resolves the outstanding issues before December 15th.
Most of India’s major ports are government run and all are expected to be impacted by the strike. However, private ports, such as Mundra, Kattupalli and Ennore, are not expected to join in the action.
It is perhaps fair to say that many Indian ports have been struggling with congestion and delays for most of the year, so further disruption could make a challenging situation even worse.
Of course, the government may resume talks in the next week and avoid the strike. The team at Croft Cargo are monitoring the situation closely.
